[UCLA-LUG] ethernet setup and sound

To configure your sound, go to a text console (ctrl-alt-F1), log in as root,
and run 'sndconfig'.
Are you bringing up your ethernet interface, after configuring it?  try
'/sbin/ifup eth0' (as root). 
also, running the 'ifconfig' program will tell you what's going on with your
network interfaces.
