[UCLA-LUG] ethernet setup and sound

I am running red hat 6.1 on a AMD 300 ibm aptiva.
during boot, linux detect my ehernet card but have trouble loading 
isapnp and sound and midi modules. 
I enter manually all the ip, default gateway and name server, but still have trouble connecting to internet. I also tried enableing DHCP but that doesn't seem to work either. 
and how do I know what resource to assign to my sound card? 
is it okay to just copy i/r info from windows control panel? 
thank you very much.  Linux without internet access is a drag...
