you can pick up a 9-pin to 25-pin adapter (or cable) pretty cheap from
most places, or the parts to build one even cheaper.  pc's used to
(usually) ship with two serial adapters - a 25 pin and a 9 pin.  the 9-pin
would connect a mouse and the 25 pin would connect a modem.  more or less.
