[UCLA-LUG] The squeaky LUG nuts get the grease

> Absolutely. A protagonistic attidute towards the STC will get us nowhere.
I believe the word you were looking for was antagonist *smirk* although
I think everyone knew what you meant. I strongly agree that in general we
haven't been very receptive/approving of much of STC.

I think that lobbying for static IPs is the wrong direction for the LUG.
Static IPs in general cause more complaints from its users. The real
question is "who needs/wants static IPs and for what?" Is it possible to
do these tasks with DHCP? For most instances the answer would be yes.
The dorms do have DNS so it would seem that hostname.resnet.ucla.edu would
work out just as well as 164.67.*.*. I will definately agree that there
are conditions that warrent static IPs, which is why such policies
surprised me so much.

The question that still drives much of this discussion is whether they
will allow us to run services like ftp/httpd/telnet/ssh without
registering for a static. If they would allow us to do this, I think that
the people who will be most concerned with a static IP are those wanting
to run long-term ftp/web servers or people like Mike.

There are a couple options besides the usual:
run a firewall which only accepts traffic on port 39 and above say 12000

run a port-scan detector to get their IP (range) and block out those
except to 39

  reroute them to Brazil

ask your favorite cs professor to write you a letter explaining why you
need certain services and forward all of your friend's ports through your
own. (this of course might leave you a bit stranded but what if you were
to do nfs on some unused port, or heck, we could set up the whole hill's
linux users to work off nfs and one computer)

run everything you can get your hands on and create subdirectories like
"music" and "warez" with `/dev/null > xxx.mpeg` files in it.

Note: the above ideas are general incarnations of the authors imagination.
Taken to heart, you may find that the laws of reality paint a different
picture. Abuse with caution.
