put a line like this:
export SKINSDIR="/path/you/want"
in your .bash_profile file (it should be in your home directory, and don't
forget the dot at the begining). This will set the variable every time
you log into your machine. You might completely log out (not just close
an xterm) and log back in, to test the setup... Let us know if you have
any more problems...
