[UCLA-LUG] Environment Variables

I just installed xmms and it plays perfectly with my SB Live.  Thanks for
your guys' help.  I'm extremely happy now that I have sound.  My question is
when I try to create an environment variable with "export
SKINSDIR=/path/of/skins"  and then echo the variable, it is apparently
there.  But when I close the terminal, and open another one and echo the
variable again, the variable is null.  How do I keep the variable?
