According to the Linux Modem HOWTO (at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-6.html#ss6.1), most or all
external modems should work with Linux, since they can't be winmodems due to
their externality.

Note that there are now three different internal PCI modems that are not
winmodems and are known to work in Linux.
