No practical experience. But at least one suggestion:

This does require a dedicated server at the office (maybe the ipmasq box
could do it) and only works on 2.0.3x kernels but your home box could be
turned into a freeswan box pretty easily. One nice thing is that it
is based on IPSEC so it can play with other IPSEC based VPNs.
For compression ssh is nice but dxpc is actually better at X apps over
slow links (no encryption unless used through the ssh tunnel or FreeSWAN
tunnel).
